Q&A with Darlene Panzera, author of Bet You'll Marry Me

Please welcome Darlene Panzera to the blog! Darlene’s “debut” novel, Bet You'll Marry Me, is on sale now from Avon Impulse. But Darlene has a very interesting publishing backstory, which makes this wonderful romance more than your typical debut! Keep reading to find out more about Darlene’s story, and don’t forget to order yourself Bet You’ll Marry Me! In July 2012, Darlene was featured on USA Today’s Happily Ever After blog, where she relayed the amazing tale of how she ended up sending her manuscript in to Avon. Below is the answer to that question, plus two more we asked her about her current and upcoming publications: One of the most frequent questions I've been hearing is: How did you come to publish a book with NY Timesbest-selling author Debbie Macomber? We started writing on opposite sides of the country. Debbie is from Washington state, and I am from New...

When Covers and Titles Meet

One of the best/worst parts of the books process is coming up with titles. Sometimes they flow so easily and sometimes it's like pulling teeth from an extremely reluctant dinosaur. Sophie Barnes has got some of the best titles around (all bias aside, of course) and it's truly been a group effort. The book that went on sale today, THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT LADY MARY, got its title from the brilliant brain of one of our fabulous publicists, Jessie. With a woman in every title, the direction for each cover was clear. Plus, what better way to fit these awesome, long, titles on a cover but over acres of glorious fabric? Aren't they gorgeous? What other books do you think have great titles? Do you have particular favorites, where the titles and covers work together just perfectly?

Awesome Book Covers

We just had a cover conference this morning (where the editors meet with the art department and discuss a few titles) and it got me thinking of some of my favorite covers lately. I adore quite a few of our recent and upcoming covers--and the books between them!--so I thought I'd show them off here. Any pique your interest? From Avon Impulse: From Avon: From William Morrow:

Making the Call

There are a lot of great parts to being a book editor. Getting to read amazing manuscripts months (sometimes years!) before they're available to the public; working with interesting, creative, innovative people; the parties. But I think my absolute favorite part is when I get to Make The Call and offer an author a contract. Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to contract three books from an amazing new author, Jennifer McQuiston. (Her debut, WHAT HAPPENS IN SCOTLAND, is on sale March 2013. End shameless plug.) Once her agent and I were done working out the details, I called Jennifer to tell her how excited I was to work with her. What followed was one of the most amazing exchanges of my career. I heard Jennifer say to someone in the room with her, "Tell Esi what you get now that Mommy has a book deal." And a little...
