I have a close friend Trip who hosts fabulous dinner parties with his boyfriend PJ in the East Village. Their home is a haven away from my three kids and the sometimes uptight banker world I inhabit on the Upper East Side. Down there, I hang out with artists, playwrights, actors, and break the mold of the mommy world. I chow, I drink, and play parlor games like Charades and Mafia. One night after a particularly fun raucous group finished an orgasmic homemade dessert, I was high on bubbly and chocolate when I joined in a conversation about fantasy. Namely, celebrity crushes. “Okay, okay, one guest announced. We’re going around and saying which star we’d bang if we each got a free pass from our spouses.” People went around and admitted who their soft spots were for,( or ahem, should I say hard?) and I was surprised by how un-my type their selections were! Orlando Bloom? There was a litany of overbred underfed Brits, some of whom were cute (James McEvoy), but none who revved my engines. Then it got to me. Before I could even draw breath to say his name, my husband Harry announced to the room that my sex fantasy since I was 17 is Trent Reznor. The Nine Inch Nails frontman and everythingman and now Oscar winning composer trumps all pretty boys around with his throaty vocals and the passionate haunted songwriting that has been a soundtrack of my life for two decades. There were some groans and eye rolling and comments about him needing a shower, but I didn’t feel the need to defend my choice. We then moved on to another game.

In the taxi home, I was staring out the window thinking about my life. Yes, I’m happy, and yes I love my family dynamic, but sometimes some moms are prone to feeling…put out to pasture. Like the best years are over.

“So would you really let me schtupf Trent Reznor?” I asked Harry.

Guffaws.

“Why are you laughing?” I asked, brow furrowed.

“Honey, you’re a thirty-six year old mother of three,” he informed me. “If you can get him to tap that, be my guest.”

“Maybe I could…” I offered meekly.

“Awesome. Go with God.”

That night I lay awake. Yes I know he is a major rock star and could have a twenty two year old fellatrix on her knees. But I’m smart! I could charm him with my wit if I only had the chance! And that’s how I concocted this book.  Girl (Hazel, who is 30 and about to get engaged) is on a plane from NY to LA and is upgraded to first class, seated next to the very icon she named the week prior. Per my 3:00am reverie, she ensorcels him and begins to follow this dream.

But ultimately, her story is about the tension between wanting roots and wanting wings. I always wanted a family, and to be “settled down,” but of course we never abandon that small part of ourselves that yearned for adventure. The question is how to marry the two. In her travels, she finds what she really wants by soaring into her dreams, something many women never have the chance to do. I’m hoping her landing point sheds some perspective to my amazing readers who have probably wondered What If….

It can be the best Christmas ever or a holiday disaster—just remember one thing: it has to have a ring. Maybe it’s a family heirloom, maybe it’s a treasure long-believed lost to the ages. Heck, maybe it’s a ring of fire (any Johnny Cash fans out there?). Whatever it is, the ring should play a central role in the romance, whether it’s bringing our lovers together or threatening to tear them apart.
