Summer Daze … How Did It Go So Fast?

By: Pam
September 03, 2010

It’s hard to believe this is the last weekend of summer…I feel like we’ve stepped into a time warp that began when Ryan Seacrest intro’ed California Gurls as the song of summer…back in April? (May?)

In fact–Memorial Day feels like it happened a year ago, doesn’t it?

Does it go so fast just because we have so much fun?

Let’s take a minute and share our best moments of summer:

For me, the highlight had to be playing hooky from the RWA conference to steal off to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter with Meg Cabot and my work friends Seale, Tavia, Christine and Wendy. (Meg already blogged all about it, so I won’t go overboard–you can read about it here).

And, taking a page from the ever-adventurous Susan Elizabeth Phillips (who we dragged to breakfast with Goofy during RWA!), I brought my family on a wee caving adventure in New Hampshire. Lesson learned: crawling through tiny holes in rocky outcrops is total fun, but it’s much easier for the four and seven year olds to wiggle their hips through than it is for us grown-up Amazon types.

And going to Lake Compounce, and riding Boulder Dash, over and over. Best coaster on the East Coast.  (Trust me. The New York Times agrees! And I bet author Kathryn Smith does, too!)

Oh. And I got to see gorgeous men (think Vin diesel, in his prime) in kilts. Throwing monster logs (Did I mention ‘in kilts’???) at the Maine Highland Games. Mmmmm.

So, will you tell us what you had the most fun doing this summer? (Or at least, what you had the most fun reading? I spent a few amang weeks devouring Loretta Chase’s backlist, which is passion-forming…)

Everyone who posts will have the opportunity to win a size L “Slytherin” tee shirt that I brought back from Universal Studios (it’s huge–wll make a great sleepshirt!) and a copy of Meg Cabot’s INSATIABLE. I only have one tee shirt (sorry!), and the drawing will be completely random.

After you take a moment to bask in the glow of those golden summer memories, get out there and enjoy those last glorious days of summer!

To prepare for her August release, I reread Kresley Cole’s entire Immortals after Dark series. Now those books are fun!

I spent the summer trying to entertain and chase after my 3 kids :) We didn’t do much since my husband only get’s Sunday’s off and we live out of state from the rest of our Family. We took the kids on their 1st over night camping trip (not in our backyard for once :) ) at New Malones Lake. It was our 2 dogs first time too. We also took a week to drive home to Washington to visit family and by the time we got home we needed a vacation from our vacation. Talk about being pulled in a million directions trying to see as many family members as possible. I did find time to do a lot of reading :) Yay for me. I read Sin Undone, Infamous, Wait for Dusk and Pray for Dawn, Blood Born, Ghost moon, Lola Carlyle Reveals all, Dead in the family, Caroline and the raider, Simply Irresistible, and I think that’s it. It amazes my sis how I find to read, but that is how I spend the kids nap time and bed time doing :) Always time to clean later, but mommy needs relaxing book time :)

Okay, Jolene – in a random bit of eeney-meeney-miney-mo; I caught the tiger by it’s toe — and you are the lucky winner of the tee shirt and copy of Insatiable! Email me directly with your information: pam (dot) jaffee (at) harpercollins (dot) com. Thanks and congrats!

This is the first time I had my kids home for a summer break. We were in year round schools for the last 9 years . The best thing was sleeping in and reading the list of authors over at the Supernatural Underground. They are a great bunch of Ghouls .

I spent the summer going to school but we also went to Branson. I just wish it hadn’t been so hot. I was reading Stephanie Laurens books.

Standing on the ancient ice of the Athabasca Glacier in western Canada on July 6th was really cool for this Southerner. The whole trip to Alberta and British Columbia was an excellent adventure. First trip with the nook!

That’s what it’s all about, right? Making windows for special time with our family.

I would have to say, my favorite memory actually came in a three parter. Considering that during the year, my day is really booked, I often miss out on a lot of the things my kids do. Their in school or I’m busy working/reading submissions. This summer, I took a step back, despite a totally rocking trip to Orlando, to really “hang with the kids”. What do I leave this summer with?
    - My swimmers making incredible advancements in their racing, dropping huge time in all of their events at every meet (or it seemed to be).
    - My youngest taking time “everyday” getting ready for her first day of Kindergarten (which happened until yesterday).

Yes, I am a proud dad, but hey, that is what summer is for.

My favorite memory of this summer was a great family reunion/75th birthday party for my mom we had in Branson, MO. The bible belt will never be the same
