THE DUCHESS
August 24, 2010
I love THE DUCHESS for many reasons, but one is because I always thought the hero was based on one of my favorite real-life Victorians the explorer Sir Richard Francis Burton. Not only was he completely scandalous, he also had an amazing love story. When his future wife, Isabel, first clapped eyes on him she told her sister that she had just seen the man she would marry. It took ten years, but marry him she did.
And THE DUCHESS itself is so much fun–Scotland! A rambling castle! A hero hidden way! A great heroine! I’ve always adored this book and my copy is literally falling apart.

I caught on to the Richard Burton inspiration immediately, which made Trevelyan a rich character to read. Also, the family dynamics between Claire, Brat, and her parents, and the family dynamics between Trevelyan, Harry, Ellie, their mother, and the ghostly hangers-on, were so well done. This was more than your typical “American heiress marries British nobleman” plot, and though Trevelyan was the hero, Harry was very sympathetic (and Claire’s idealism of Harry and the Scottish Highlands was very realistic).
