To Whom It May Concern

This is a different kind of “Ask an Editor Friday.” This week, I went over to the Submission Guidelines to see if there were any questions in those comments that kept getting asked. There is one that comes up a lot and it’s actually a question that I get a LOT at conferences.

Many people notice in our guidelines that there’s no direction as to whom you should address your query. That is intentional. We rotate who goes through the Avon Romance Submission email inbox each week and there is no guarantee who will be (wo)manning the emails for any given week. But don’t despair! We, the Avon Editors, know each other pretty well by now. So well, in fact, that we can tell by the first line or so of a query who the best editor will be for the project.

So, I promise, we will not get offended or automatically delete your query if it is addressed to Avon Romance or Whom it May Concern. Nor will we turn into Feral Warriors (like the ones in Pamela Palmer’s Rapture Untamed) at queries to “Sirs” although there aren’t so many “sirs” around here. The safest bet is “Dear Avon Editors” or “Dear Avon Romance.” Just remember to read the guidelines before you submit so that it comes to us in the correct format.
