"A Madcap Erika-type Adventure"

That’s what Carrie Feron said to me as she left the office on Thursday…she was taking Friday off for “a madcap Erika-type adventure.”  I can’t wait to find out what that was.

I have a reputation here at the office, you see.  I once gathered some friends and drove to Niagara Falls just because I wanted to put some mileage on my new car.  We stopped in Buffalo in search of buffalo wings…except we had no real destination and just drove around downtown, hoping there was a neon sign that said “Buffalo Wings Here.”  There wasn’t.

And we somehow ended up at the historic Millard Fillmore House when my friend spotted a sign on the side of the road and shouted, “Millard Fillmore’s house! We have to go see it!”  That’s when I learned he was our 13th president. I mean, how many of you knew he was one of our presidents, let alone the 13th?

Anyway, I do like going on these types of adventures. There’s something about just taking off and letting loose, doing something out of the ordinary that is exciting and rejuvenating.

Just like the heroine in Suzanne Enoch’s A Lady’s Guide to Improper Behavior…Theresa Weller is usually a proper young lady, except when she met Colonel Bartholomew James.  Proper decorum goes out the window the moment she set eyes on the dark and brooding officer…and it’s the best thing that could have happened to either of them.

And what about you? What “improper behavior” have you engaged in that led to something fun and good?

I’d enjoy traveling with you, Erika. One of the best for us was going to see Graceland. We were driving to visit family and we saw the sign, so we stopped and had our “Walking in Memphis” moment. Then we got lost trying to get back to the right highway and saw absolutely the most beautiful part of Tennessee ever where we pulled over for an impromptu picnic after learning about one-way bridges (always honk before rounding that corner!). I’d love to find that highway again, and our search for it may be our next trip!

That sounds like fun, Erika. I’ve done similar things–drove from Anchorage, Alaska to Billings, Montana and stopped on a lark at a Chapters Bookstore in Edmonton, Canada for the midnight release party of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Impromptu trips are even more fun–like a 2am drive from Anchorage to Talkeetna, Alaska because I was bored and wanted to do a little salmon fishing.
Or like my latest one–agreeing to a reading at an “adult” club with some other authors. should be interesting and provide an excellent source of research.

Hope you and your friends have tried the impromptu trips since your last one.

My Improper behavior happen back in the 70′s when I attended UNL (Nebraska) when I was told after the bars closed at 1 a.m. everyone would gather down near the dorms and Selek Quad. I went down to be greeted by nearly 500 students blocked off the crossroads to police with bonfires and in the center streakers ran! It was hysterical watching watching an hefty upper classman vaulting over a hedge and coming down on it (ouch)!
