London: Miscellany

I don’t have a theme for my last post about London, just a round-up of a few unrelated but cool things I enjoyed…plus, more pictures!

1. Go to Postman’s Park!  Near St. Paul’s Cathedral, Postman’s Park was originally a burial ground and it does indeed have interesting, old headstones, but it is most famous for its Memorial to Heroic Self Sacrifice.

In 1900, the Memorial to Heroic Self Sacrifice, “a memorial to ordinary people who died saving the lives of others and might otherwise have been forgotten” was created.  The memorial is a long wall displaying ceramic tablets.  And though most would assume these plaques attract interest because of their great historic value, in actuality the big draw is the often unintentionally amusing accounts of how these heroes died.  I mean no disrespect, but I’ll let you be the judge, below a small sampling:

Not sure how his parents being absent in India had to do with anything…

The line “Mother I saved him but could not save myself”seems a bit over the top, no?

2. Eat English crisps!  They have so many wonderful flavors!  My favorite is the flame grilled steak which we now have a case of shipped to us every 6 months.

3. Go to the Eye!  I know it may seem like a cheesy tourist attraction, but it’s actually a fabulous way to get a 360 degree bird’s eye view of London.   The wheel is so large it takes about 30 minutes to do a full rotation.

Thanks for letting me share my London experiences!  Please do post about your own experiences or if you have any suggestions of what I should check out the next time I’m there.  Cheers!
