Let’s hear it for the weird stuff!

A lot of people ask me when I first became interested in the paranormal. The truth is, I’ve been in love with all things weird for as far back as I can remember. I started with fairy tales, of course, but my favorite book when I was four was The Golden Book of Dinosaurs. Okay, I know dinosaurs were real, but can you think of anything weirder…or scarier, for that matter…than watching a t-rex lumber down the freeway, or a pteranodon/pteradactyl swoop down with a wingspan only slightly smaller than that of an airplane and snatch up your neighbor while he’s bending over to pick up the morning newspaper?

I’ve always loved the BIG what ifs. What if that airplane coming in for its final approach suddenly disappeared? What if Thomas Jefferson showed up on my front porch needing a ride somewhere and I got to drive him down into Washington, D.C. and show him what this country looks like two hundred years later? I’m not insane, I promise, but having a wild imagination is probably a lot like living in Alice’s Wonderland. You never know what it’s going to come up with.

Though I love the paranormal, for years I stayed far away from anything scary. The downside to having a strong…uh, weird…imagination is that it doesn’t always…or ever…go away when you want it to. Like bedtime. One night when I was a teen I forced the family German Shepherd to sleep in my room because I kept imagining that the aliens I was dying to meet (and half-terrified of) would choose the middle of the night to visit me. Yes, I knew I was being foolish. (Hence the not crawling into bed with Mom and Dad, or sneaking into my brother’s room to sleep on his floor. The pup wouldn’t judge me. Scratch on the door to get out, yes. Judge me, no.) Unfortunately, logic doesn’t hold much sway in the middle of the night. Vivid imaginations can definitely be a double-edged sword.

I didn’t embrace the horror (or dark paranormal) genre until Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That brilliant, funny, wonderful show totally desensitized me to the scary stuff. Seriously. Don’t ask me why. As long as there’s a strong plot, I’ll watch anything, now.

My current favorite shows? Almost all are paranormal, or have a lot of weird going on: LOST, Fringe, Stargate Universe,  Flashforward, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, Grey’s Anatomy. Okay, that last one is for the characters and the romance, not the weird. Usually. I must have replayed that first kiss between Owen and Cristina last season five times. Hot!

So, what do you love about the weird stuff? What shows are you watching? And while we’re at it, what do you think is the most romantic show on t.v. right now, paranormal or not?

Pamela – first, let me say that I love the Feral Warriors and their amazing world. As someone who has always had a more than vivid imagination, I know exactly what you mean about allowing your imagination to get carried away and literally scaring yourself to the point of hiding under the covers. I still do it to myself and even having my Rottie with me doesn’t help sometimes. : )
I love a great scary movie, the kind that makes you jump inside your skin but they are few and far between anymore so it’s easier to get a good scare from reading and allowing my imagination to set the scene. As for TV, I’m an obsessed TRUE BLOOD fan and eagerly await the new season but also love to indulge in such shows as V, HOUSE (xo) and am a total BIG BANG THEORY and CSI afficianado. I am looking forward to THE BORGIAS, GAME OF THRONES and CAMELOT, whether or not they will hold my attention is yet to be determined. As for the most romantic show … that’s a tough one but if there’s one that I tune in each week more for the relationships between characters than the murder, it’s CASTLE. Gotta love Nathan Fillion and while you’re always hoping Castle and Becket will finally do the deed, you know the show will end if they do so you crave the sexual tension instead. Ummmm … we do love that leading up to the moment sexual tension, don’t we?? We don’t get it much in real life so it’s why we enjoy escaping into our imaginations and allowing it to take us to the limits. We are so lucky to have such wonderful writers as yourself to help us go as far as our imaginations will allow. Happy Reading everyone. : )

I took a break from TV and completely submerged myself into reading — after helping my kidlets with homework, and facilitating the drama du jour, of course. When I was glued to the tube, metaphorically speaking, of course; I watched Bones, House, The Closer, and True Blood. Trevor digs Samurai Jack, (if you haven’t tuned it, it’s pretty trippy). Rachel loves Phineas & Ferb (my husband thinks they’re hilarious). Chelsea is all chick: iCarley, True Jackson, et al. While they watch, I read.

    So, what’s Jag’s mate’s name? (nudge, nudge)

The weird stuff are cool because they are unique and not the norm. I like reading about them. However, as for the shows, I’m iffy. I rather watch movies of them but not shows. I don’t have the time to watch them. Instead, I rather read. If I want paranormal stuff, then I go to Syfy or some other channel where they air the paranormal/weird movies. Otherwise, I stay clear of them.

As for the most romantic show out there…I have no clue. I stick to certain shows, and most of them I don’t consider “romantic”. So sorry for not able to come up with some good ones here.

Haven´t read your books yet, but they really sound like something up my alley. Im a fan for weird stuff too, and yes, the big imagination thing is a double edge sword, amen to that. As easy as you can imagine amazing things you can imagine all sort of nasties living under your bed. As the other commenter said, don´t have much time to watch TV, kids, Real Life, etc, always get in the way, but of the series I like – Fringe, Supernatural, Being Human, Doctor Who, White Collar (not supernatural at all, but well, always like Tim DeKay and the other guy is hot too) and a couple more – I would say that the most romantic is… Uh, don´t know, actually… I think they all have its rather good balance, and seeing as I don´t actually watch romantic series, Im at a loss with an answer here. Sorry :) Looking foward to get your books.

Oh, good reason for not watching much TV! Thank goodness for DVRs. When I’m on deadline, I’m lucky if I can carve out time for a show at all. If I do, it’s at the end of the evening when I quit work, or while I’m exercising, and I can watch one in 40 mins. without commercials. Glad you’re enjoying the Ferals!

Honestly, I don’t get to watch much TV these days because by the time I get a moment to lay down and relax I am into the mood to read. I love the Feral Warriors. I love the world and rhe romance and most of all the steamy scenes. I am a mother of two so I can tell you that I may not get much sleep but when I am reading your books who needs sleep. *winks* Well except for dreaming, lol.
